Recording II



Decepcionante primer día de grabación. No hemos tenido más que problemas técnicos y creo que el ordenador del local no va a servir. Algunas de las tomas de la batería de April Rain Song quedaron perfectas, pero se perdieron porque el ordenador se colgó varias veces. Y por si esto fuera poco, el viejo Cool Edit Pro 2.0 (local) no se quiere llevar bien con mi Cubase Elements 6 (mi casa). Hay que encontrar otra manera de hacerlo.

Disappointing first day of recording. We were most of the time solving technical problems and I'm afraid the computer in our studio is not going to make it. Some takes of April Rain Song drums turned out perfect, but then were lost as the computer crashed several times. To make things worse, old Cool Edit Pro 2.0 (studio) doesn't seem to get on very well with my Cubase Elements 6 (home). We'll have to find another way.

Recording I

Sí, amigos. Estas próximas semanas nos vamos a concentrar en grabar las canciones que tocamos en nuestro último concierto, las nueve canciones que hemos escrito hasta ahora. En la foto, podéis ver a Rodrigo toqueteando cables y conexiones (de hecho, es capaz de hacer esto a la velocidad de la luz, como esa mano borrosa de la foto demuestra más allá de cualquier duda razonable) e intentando que todo esté listo para el próximo martes, que será el momento en que empezemos a hacer pruebas para encontrar la colocación óptima de los micrófonos con el fin de obtener el mejor sonido posible.

Yes, my dear friends. This next few weeks we are going to concentrate on recording the songs we played in last concert, the nine songs we have written up to now. In the picture, Rodrigo fiddling with wires and connections (he can actually do this at the speed of light, as his blurry hand in the photo proves beyond any reasonable doubt) and trying to get everything ready for next Tuesday, when we will start making tests to figure out the best placement for microphones in order to get the best sound possible.

Café Teatro Enero 2012

 Bueno, finalmente dimos el concierto. El sonido fue mucho mejor de lo que pensábamos que iba a ser. Rodrigo tuvo que usar una batería electrónica. Una batería normal hace demasiado ruido para un sitio como ese. Ensayamos con la batería electrónica por primera vez dos días antes del concierto. El sonido fue absolutamente decep- cionante. Nos quedamos horro- rizados y no sabíamos exactamente qué hacer, si suspenderlo todo o qué. Al final decidimos dejar la cosa reposar, marcharnos a casa, regresar el miércoles y ver qué pasaba. Bien, despues de algunos ajustes de Rodrigo por aquí y por allá, la cosa no sonó tan mal, lo cual hizo que nos invadiera un enorme sentimiento de alivio. Échale un vistazo al video, yo creo que el sonido es bastante aceptable. A la gente le gustó (vinieron unos 30-40) pero tengo que admitir que había sólo unas pocas caras desconocidas, que, de todas formas, era exactamente lo que esperábamos. Aqui debajo tenéis el vídeo de la primera canción del concierto, nuestra versión de Echoes, de Pink Floyd.

Well, we finally gave the concert, at last. The sound was much better than we thought it was going to be at first. Rodrigo had to use electronic drums. A normal drum kit makes too much noise. We rehearsed with the electronic drum kit two days before the concert for the fist time. The sound was absolute and utter crap. We were appalled and didn't know exactly what to do, put the whole thing off or what. We finally decided to call it a day and return on Wednesday and see what happened. Well, on Wednesday, after some Rodrigo's adjustements here and there, the thing didn't sound as bad and a huge feeling of relief came over us. Check out the video, I think the sound is quite acceptable. People liked it (30-40 came) but I have to admit there were only a few unknown faces, which was exactly what was to be expected, anyway. 2012 First Gig

Sí, vamos a dar un concierto. El primero en seis meses. El lugar es un pequeño local en el centro de la ciudad que lleva programando música en directo desde hace bastante tiempo. Vendrán familia y amigos y puede que algún despistado.

Yes, we're giving a concert. The first in six months. The venue is a small club with a tradition in live music. Some friends and relatives will come, hopefully.

Journey to the Polar Sea I: Farewell

The name of Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) is forever linked with the quest of a north-west passage, a sea route linking the North Atlantic, via the Hudson Strait, through the ice bound reaches north of the American continent, to the Bering Strait that separates Alaska from the north-eastern tip of the Asian mainland. Franklin did in fact discover the passage; but he did it so in the course of a final venture, undertaken when he was touching sixty, that cost him his life. His expedition vanished in 1847, and some years were to pass, and numerous search parties to fail, before skeletons, clothing, instruments and other remains, including a written document, were finally located and pieced together to tell what we know, or infer, of the fate of Franklin and his fellow explorers (Editor's note).

The music is a four-part piece, the first of which is called Farewell: preparations for the voyage, excitement, tension, anticipation. Finally, the mooring ropes are undone, the ship starts swaying slowly and disappears in the distance.

El nombre de Sir John Franklin estará para siempre ligado a la búsqueda del Pasaje al Noroeste, una ruta marítima que unía el Atlántico Norte, por el Estrecho de Hudson y a través de las heladas costas al norte del continente americano, hasta el Estrecho de Bering, que separa Alaska de la punta más nororiental de Asia. Franklin de hecho descubrió el Pasaje; pero lo hizo en el curso de una empresa final, llevada a cabo casi a los sesenta años, que le costó la vida. Su expedición se desvaneció en 1847, y unos cuantos años tuvieron que pasar, y numerosas operaciones de búsqueda fracasar, antes de que esqueletos, ropas, instrumentos y otros restos, incluyendo un documento escrito, fueran descubiertos y estudiados para poder saber, o deducir, el destino de Franklin y sus compañeros.

Es una pieza que consta de cuatro partes, la primera de las cuales es Despedida (Farewell): preparativos del viaje, nervios, tensión, expectación. Finalmente, se sueltan amarras, el barco comienza a balancearse lentamente y desaparece en la distancia.

The band's first concert ever. The venue was a small municipal auditorium. The sound was good. Not many people came, some family and friends who, I think, liked the music. I guess they expected something much more simple and straightforward, so some of the audience looked quite surprised at the end of the concert. Good.

El primer concierto de la banda. El local es un pequeño auditorio municipal. El sonido fue bueno. No vino mucha gente, algunos familiares y amigos a quienes les gusto la música, eso creo. Supongo que esperaban algo mucho más simple y directo, así que parte de la audiencia parecía estar bastante sorprendida al final del concierto. Bien.
